My Target Audience, And Why I Chose To Target Them...
I chose a target audience of fifteen to thirty year old males with a working class background I chose these as a specific age and gender due to I believe that the genre of film I have chosen to create it is more male orientated of a working class background. Due to the style of my film I chose to aim my short film at film fans due to the low budget and conventions of my film, only a specific type of film viewer would go and see my short film, I have chosen to aim my film at regular down loaders/online streamers, due to the new technology available it is easier to show of my short film over the internet.

I chose to do this type of target audience because I am familiar with it as an audience because it is my age group and aimed at people like me - media students or teachers and film buffs. It meets my specific demographic. I identified my target audiences generic pleasures by asking my class mates what they want from a film, and asking my self to get my own opinion. Therefore I stuck to what my classmates and I found and designed my film to these needs/generic pleasures:
During the process of making my film I had a first draft idea, my short film draft was to have a similar character but in a different style of 'The Last Man On Earth', and I had a short draft of my short film but I presented my draft short film idea to the class and asked for there feedback,
( http://ryanfishera2media2013.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/my-interview-about-my-first-film-attempt.html ) I decided after this and a considerably long over look and conversation with my teacher I chose to scrap my draft idea as it was not meeting any of the generic conventions which I wanted it to do also the film was to boring, the style was to dark and dreary. Doing that I learnt that the film which I had first created did not meet what my target audience wanted to see. This is the main way I found out what my target audience really wanted, I think that although I chose the correct target audience as the producer and distributor of my film I should have done more research into the market I wanted to penetrate. If I had done this I would have saved time creating a short film which did not meet the needs of my audience. I believe that although I did know what my audience wanted I used past audience data to create my film, using this saved me time to create a better film, in an idealistic world I would have spent the time to create new questionnaires and audience feed back techniques to have new and up to date feedback. My data although true audience wants and needs are always changing year by year, therefore as a media student and knowing this I should have redone this data analysis. On the other hand I have belief in my own work from last year that my data was sufficient.
I planned my short film to fit in with my chosen 'Target Audience' by using characters the same age who, therefore the audience are able to connect and relate to the main character of my short film. This way the film is specifically designed to lure in the age group I have specified. Using focus group feed back I was told to change my short film, so that the audience could relate to the character in my film therefore meeting the criteria for my 'Target Audience' , this would mean that the story would make more sense to the viewer. Using streaming, art house cinema and competitions is the most common way to get your (my) short film out there this is why I have chosen to do this to create an audience for my short film because people have to chose to go the the film therefore the advertising over the internet and in the small cinema need to attract the top amount of audience.
To meet with my target audiences generic pleasures I used my plot to keep the audience interested in my short film, although there is no narrative to the film, the story is understandable and capturing. Using the character of the short film to meet the generic pleasures of the audience I used a character of a similar age to the audience so that they are able to relate to character, this makes them think about how they would react in a similar situation keeping them involved in the storyline. By using a hook nearer the end of the short film, this keeps people talking about the short film after meaning they will pass on if they think the film is good (or bad) but none the less your film can spread and capture a wider audience. As I did not use a sound track only ambient sound the story has to be a very easy to get but captivating piece of cinema.
The likely reaction of my short film from my chosen audience is probably slightly confused as it is not wrapped up at the end, but this short film is not for the type of audience 'Hyperdermic syringe'. My Target Audience are a niche market, they are also a very active audience they need to want to be involved in the story line. It is not a very main stream market at all, my short film is only targeted at real film buffs. My film is delivered in a way of streaming which the consumer would have to look for specifically because I do not have the funds to market my short film so the main way of marketing my short film is through word of mouth and entering competitions.
I would have preferred to have a more specific target audience on reflection this would have made my film, poster and magazine article easier to target my specific audience. This would have enabled me to create a better more specific product.

- questioning reality
- after watching you need to be left with questions and talking about the film
- the consumer but be intrigued by the storyline / character
